Brazil Dominates Possession but Fails to Find Breakthrough
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (25 June 2024) - Brazil was held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Costa Rica in their opening match of the Copa América on Tuesday night. Despite dominating possession throughout the game, Brazil was unable to find a breakthrough against a resolute Costa Rican defense.
Brazil started the game brightly and created a number of chances in the early going, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Neymar, in particular, was wasteful in front of goal, missing several clear-cut opportunities.
As the game wore on, Costa Rica grew in confidence and began to create chances of their own. They had a glorious opportunity to take the lead in the second half when Celso Borges found himself in space inside the Brazil penalty area, but his shot was well saved by Alisson.
In the end, Brazil was left to rue a lack of quality in the final third. They had 70% possession and 18 shots on goal, but they were unable to find a way past Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
